Disability History Month 2019

UK Disability History Month (UKDHM) is an annual event creating a platform to focus on the history of our struggle for equality and human rights. The awareness month runs from 22 November to 22 December every year.

This year, we are teaming up with Visability 93 to call for a re-imagination of the International Symbol for Access - the wheelchair.

"Every day, people with invisible disabilities are denied access to the services they need, like car parking, priority seating and restrooms, because they don’t look like they have a disability."

"The truth is, not everyone with a disability uses a wheelchair – far from it. In the UK, 93-95% of people with disabilities are not wheelchair users. By changing the symbol so that it is inclusive of all disabilities, visible or invisible, we believe more people will be able to access the services they need, without being questioned."

Over the course of the month, we will be postering over all the accessible toilets and other signage with posters showing the full spectrum of options for the International Symbol of Access.
