We stand in solidarity with all communities across the UK that have faced racist, xenophobic and Islamophobic violence in the last week. The rise in racist violence has been fuelled by a dangerous narrative that has become increasingly common in UK politics and press; defaming migrants, Muslims, people of colour with the goal of division and normalising hate.
We acknowledge a lot of Strathclyde students and staff will be feeling scared and vigilant ‐ especially those who are migrants, asylum seekers, Black, Muslim, and people of colour, and those with families or friends in these demographics. While media coverage has focused on England and the problem might be less visible in Scotland, racism is still rife, and the potential for the violence to spread to Glasgow is a huge source of stress for these communities.
Strath Union, and the wider student movement, stand firmly and completely against racism and all forms of discrimination and intolerance. We are committed to creating an inclusive culture for all students and staff where everyone feels safe and welcome and marginalised voices are uplifted. We do not tolerate the spreading of hatred and division and condemn the violence witnessed. The Union takes all reports of discrimination on campus seriously and will support any student who wants to make a report to the university.
We send our solidarity and support to all students who will be feeling anxious at this unsettling time and urge everyone to come together to support those most impacted. Stay safe and be assured we will continue to create a welcoming and safe space on campus for our student community.
