An Introduction to the Advice Hub

Because what’s right for one might not be right for another, Advice Hub is here to support all Strathclyders whenever problems or difficulties arise on their academic journey, no matter how big or small.

If you visit Strath Union at #51Richmond, you might come across a safe space just behind Roasters where all Strathclyde students at any level of study are most welcome to drop by and get the advice and support they need—this is Advice Hub.

From course transfers and appeals to council tax and tenancy checks to student funding and emergency financial support, Advice Hub is an independent and confidential advice service, run by professional staff advisers who can support Strathclyders on matters related to their studies, housing, and funding and finance.

Today, we sat down to have a wee chat with Holly Shaw, the manager of Advice Hub, who shared with us what the advice service is about, how it works, and why giving and receiving advice is of paramount importance.

At Advice Hub, Strathclyde students can simply come and get advice about their concerns free of charge. Holly emphasised that “even though we work very closely with the University, especially on academic matters, the advice service isn’t delivered by the University. We are an independent and registered charity, and most importantly customer-centric, so the service is in the best interests of Strathclyde students.” This also means that you can be confident that your concerns or queries will be dealt with impartially and without judgement.

Academic Advice

When asked what sort of issues students often seek advice on, Holly shared that the team has been helping students with academic appeals the most; for example, “when students receive their marks and wish to appeal the academic decision, we help them throughout the procedure.” Advice Hub can help if students wish to lodge appeals or report personal circumstances. Furthermore, Advice Hub can also advise on exams, withdrawals and transfers.

Financial Advice

Another area that Advice Hub covers is financial advice. Holly explained that “when students are struggling with the cost of living, for example, we can help check if they’re eligible for any funding and assist in submitting the application.” There are options like Discretionary Fund, UK Welfare Benefits, International Student Fund, and many more that Advice Hub can help Strathclyde students with the application. “Though we cannot guarantee the outcome of applications, we do our best to support the student throughout the procedure,” Holly added.

Housing Advice

For many students who move to stay here in Glasgow, Advice Hub can also give advice about housing and accommodation, whether you live in a student hall, a private student accommodation, or a flat rented from a landlord or letting agency. Holly pointed out that “we support students with housing, especially at the end of the tenancy. We help ensure that things are done correctly and that students are not taken advantage of.” Keep in mind that housing and accommodation advice, such as tenant rights and responsibilities, contract/tenancy reviews, tenancy deposits, etc., is short of legal action and legal guidance, but the team can signpost you to legal advice if required.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution, which makes Advice Hub keep doing what they do best—approaching each student and their issue or concern with a customer-centric approach and personalised support. “What’s right for one might not be right for another,” Holly added.

Essentially, solving any problems does require taking action. We asked to what extent “advice” plays a role here. Holly said that “rules and regulations are complicated, and they can be overwhelming. That’s where the advice comes in place.”

“We are not going to tell you what to do, but what we’re trying to do here is to empower you to make a decision. With your best interest in mind, we will help you break down the problem, then weigh up your options and potential outcomes.”

Holly added, “sometimes when you face a problem or difficulty, all you need is to be heard, to be taken seriously. Advice Hub does just that. We believe you. We take you seriously. Whatever you’re going through, you’re not in it alone.”

Advice Hub is open Monday to Friday all year round other than a Christmas closure and on public holidays. All Strathclyde students at any level of study can explore more about Advice Hub and book an appointment at: https://www.strathunion.com/support/
