Tharana's Story

I joined the North Lanarkshire Befriending Project in the month of October in 2023. I have been matched with a young person who engages in different exciting activities with me once every 2 weeks. So far, we have gone on walks in the city and explored their hometown. I underwent training over the course of one week to prepare myself to provide a safe and comforting environment as well as engaging in useful conversation.

I was motivated to volunteer for this project as it is a great opportunity for me to invest my time in the growth and happiness of a young person. I understand the challenges in navigating the complexities of adolescence and providing my support where the young person could feel heard and valued seemed like reason enough to participate. I have many common interests with the young person, and that aided my understanding of the transformative power of genuine connections. The young person found someone to confide in and they get to explore their hobbies that could shape how they choose to spend their time.

This volunteerism project serves as an inspiring reminder that small, consistent efforts can have an enduring impact in the lives of young adults.
