Sheik's Story

PGRVolunteer Stories
Sheik at TEDx conference.

My name is Sheik Abdul Malik, and I am a 2ndyear doctoral researcher in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

I have volunteered throughout the entirety of my university career, however, at the University of Strathclyde, I have seized every opportunity that I have had with the Student’s Union to get involved in campaigns and initiatives. I currently sit on the Clubs Executive Committee which helps students who are applying to form societies. We also review grant applications which help clubs to grow their membership and to develop themselves through society-related activities.

Beyond this, I am currently the Lead Organiser of TEDxUniversityofStrathclyde, and with my team of over 50 students, we are planning our flagship Annual Ideas Conference, the highlight of our year! I am also the President of the Strathclyde University Hot Air Balloon (SUHAB) society as I am passionate about flying. I also created Strathclyde Speakers; a society aimed at helping students develop their public speaking skills of which I am also the President.

I believe that volunteering is one of the best ways that we as students can develop ourselves beyond our academic courses and help us gain the confidence that we need to succeed once we leave university. I would strongly encourage all students to find a club or society that they are passionate about and get involved. You will have amazing opportunities to work in teams with students from all backgrounds working towards shared goals which is incredibly motivating. Being part of the volunteering community is arguably one of the most rewarding experiences of being in university not just socially, but professionally as well. You can develop several highly useful transferable skills that will be invaluable to you in your future careers.

I have been fortunate enough to be able to establish societies that I am passionate about and to share my experience and drive with others. I have had a fantastic time volunteering so far and I aim to continue to do so well beyond the conclusion of my studies.
