Nadia's Story

I studied Journalism & Creative Writing and Law between 2008-2012. Volunteering was the most formative part of my student era. I was deeply involved in the Strathclyde Telegraph, becoming Editor-in-Chief in my final year, as well as the Women’s and BAME liberation campaigns.

Because of funding cuts, there were less opportunities than we expected for practical learning during our course. The Strathclyde Telegraph filled this gap – everything from content creation to managing deadlines, negotiating fees with advertisers, and navigating institutional politics. I also got involved in supporting and leading advocacy campaigns for diversity & inclusion both at Strathclyde and with NUS.

The experience I gained by volunteering was invaluable. Not just practical skills, but also the team dynamics that you face every day in the workplace. I learned (sometimes the hard way) how important it is to develop coping mechanisms for managing burnout, as well as resolving conflict more maturely.

I made some incredible friends during my time volunteering. A decade later, we’re visiting each other across continents, and have been in each other’s weddings.

The experience I had in my own student community definitely influenced me moving into my current role from the private sector. As Executive Director of Transformation at University of Glasgow, I'm passionate about supporting the next generation of students.

To everyone who is currently volunteering - thank you for everything you contribute to your community. And if you're considering signing up - take this as your sign from the universe to give it a go!
