Salary: £22,214

Grade: 5.1

Contract Type: Permanent

FTE: 35 hours per week (Full Time)

 

Main Responsibilities:

Policy (60%)

  • Support creation of motions for Student Parliament and Union democratic committees through the creation and delivery of training, workshops and digital content.
  • Review submitted motions, identify potential policy conflicts and support policy outcomes from Student Parliament and Union committees such as Education Committee.
  • Audit Strath Union standing policies to summarise outcomes and support their implementation with the Student Executive and Union Services.
  • Compile impact reports on the outcomes of Union policies.
  • Work with key staff such across all areas of the Union to ensure Executive Officers and appropriate staff are effectively briefed ahead of all major University meetings.

 

  • Maintain a working knowledge of policy developments and initiatives in Higher Education and brief colleagues accordingly so as to ensure that the Union’s representational work is current, relevant and informed.
  • Provide appropriate policy training for student delegates ahead of conferences and events including NUS UK and NUS Scotland conferences.
  • Analyse National Student Survey data, Strath Union internal survey data and other relevant surveys to track student feedback and provide recommendations to inform the work of the department.
  • Support the Chief Executive, Student Executive and Trustee Board in the preparation and delivery of appropriate policy papers to inform decision making.

 

Campaigns (40%)

  • Carry out relevant research including student surveys to support campaigns identified with the Student Executive.
  • Support political, student led campaigns with policy, research and insight.
  • Support the elected Officers in the shaping and realisation of their aims and objectives.
  • Collaborate with Student Engagement staff, including Advice Hub, on planning and implementing organisation wide campaigns.
  • Generate digital media content relevant to policy and campaigns on the Strath Union website and social media.

 

Support:

  • Support the work of the Representation & Democracy Manager in delivering departmental projects and events.
  • Support the Student Executive with development and execution of advocacy strategies.
  • Support the Representation & Democracy Manager in the creation of an annual impact report for student representation and democracy.
  • Support in the delivery of regular pop up unions to engage and showcase the work of the Student Engagement Department.
  • Support the Representation & Democracy Manager in the creation of an Annual Student Submission.
  • Support in the administration, co-ordination and delivery of student elections and referendums.
  • Support Student Voice Coordinator in analysing Student Staff Liaison Committee minutes and compiling impact reports on positive change generated by the student rep structure.

 

Administration:

  • Administer and prepare papers and minutes for Student Parliament and other representation and democracy led meetings such as the SU Education committee.
  • Administer and prepare relevant papers for Trustee Board meetings.

 

 

Student Care:

  • Work in effective collaboration with Student Officers and all departments within Strathclyde Students’ Union.
  • Ensure that students’ expectations are exceeded wherever possible.
  • Deal with feedback, whether positive or negative, in a courteous, efficient and timely manner.

 

General:

  • Comply with all Strathclyde Students’ Union policies, procedures and governing documents.
  • Work within Strathclyde Students’ Union Mission, Vision and Values at all times.
  • Be responsible for all Health and Safety requirements related to the role.
  • Undertake any other tasks commensurate with the level of appointment that may from time to time be reasonably requested.
  • The post-holder is expected to portray a positive image of the Association, both internally and externally and to set high standards of personal integrity and professionalism at all times, leading by example.
  • The post-holder is expected to build and maintain professional networks to ensure knowledge is kept up-to-date.
  • The post-holder is expected to undertake such personal and professional development as required to maintain appropriate knowledge and skills to fulfil the requirements of the role. This may include attending events away from the offices of the Association and outside Glasgow.

 

Key relationships:

Internal: Representation & Democracy Manager, Student Voice Coordinator Sabbatical Officers, Advice Hub, Head of Student Engagement and staff of the Association.

External: University departments and staff, NUS, colleagues in other students’ unions, any other relevant external organisations to the role.

 

Other Information:

The role is subject to a 6-month probationary period.

Regarding pensions, the post-holder will be eligible to join the Universities' LGPS Scheme (22.7% and employee of 5.5%).

The post may include occasional evening and weekend work.

It is expected that the starting grade for this role would be 5.1

31 days annual leave per year plus 11 public/bank/local holidays (Pro rata as necessary)
