Details

Two Student Internships are available part-time for around 16 weeks (split over 2 semesters, 8 weeks each) in Autumn 2022, from October 2022 to around March 2023 at £9.90 per hour, with 80 hours available for each intern, worked flexibly over the period of the internship.

The Race Equality Intern role will foster a bridge between staff and students to encourage race equality dialogue and co-creation across our diverse learning communities, as well as helping to diversify the University’s learning and teaching practices and spaces in a supportive role. This Internship project will include raising awareness, building community, and facilitating practice amongst our students and staff in decolonising, anti-racist, and inclusive curriculum approaches. This project will allow two interns to work together and in partnership with the Equality & Diversity team and Strath Union to support Strathclyde’s ongoing commitment to race equality.  

Aims of Internship Project

  • Raise student awareness and engagement in the development of decolonising, anti-racist, and inclusive curriculum approaches.
  • Prioritise student voice and co-creation within the decolonising agenda.
  • Develop safe and inclusive spaces and opportunities for students (and staff where appropriate) to have constructive and supported discourse around race equality in the curriculum at a university and subsequently local subject area level.
  • The role-modelling of approach and building of supportive resources for students to begin this work personally and academically.

Main Activities/Responsibilities

  • Conduct focus groups with students around decolonising, anti-racist, and inclusive curriculum approaches.
  • Look into the creation of a student network.
  • Organise events and communications plan with and for students around these areas.
  • Build links and resources from other external student-led groups in this area and in-house staff already working in this area.
  • Help curate an online space.
  • Supporting the BAME Rep’s work in this area.
  • Reviewing the current literature.
  • Preparing a final report outlining progress made, recommendations going forward, and including a reflection piece about the internship experience itself.
  • Participating in regular meetings and provide a progress update.
  • Any other duties deemed appropriate by the Project leads.

Person Specification:

Educational and/or Professional Qualifications

Essential Criteria

A current undergraduate or postgraduate student at Strathclyde with an interest in, and commitment to, equality, diversity, and inclusion

Desirable Criteria

Passion and a knowledge and understanding of decolonising, anti-racist, and inclusive curriculum research

Experience of organising and facilitating events online and in person

Experience or knowledge of preparing literature reviews, reports etc

Experience of presenting findings using different media (e.g., videos, infographics etc)

Good verbal communication skills, proven ability to communicate with a wide range of groups and individuals

Good written communication skills, proven ability to write documents / reports / emails / social media in a professional manner

Excellent research skills including desk-based research, proven ability to gather evidence, perform analysis, evaluation and write up findings

Strong organisational and planning skills, proven ability to manage multiple tasks

Good time management skills, proven ability to meet deadlines

Ability to work independently and within a team, seeking guidance where needed

IT skills – outlook, MS packages, zoom
