We are looking for two eco-conscious people to help us run a brand new Zero Waste Store in the Union! The Zero Waste store is a new project, aiming to provide the Strathclyde community with a more sustainable option to shop, as well as create meaningful job opportunities for students. This is a new endeavour for us, so we need people who are able to take the lead, as well as willing to learn and adapt with us. 

As Store Managers, you would be responsible for leading the staff team and overseeing the overall running of the shop (with support from Student Engagement and Commercial Services). We’re keen to create a fun, innovative, transparent and student-friendly environment that’s constantly evolving and responding to the needs of the community. 

This role is for you if you are up for a challenge, excited by problem-solving, showing initiative and trying new approaches, reliable and comfortable taking on responsibility, and as comfortable with numbers as you are with people! Crucially, you must also have an interest in environmental activism, sustainability and a passion for promoting lower-waste living. 

About you: 

You have experience leading teams – volunteering counts! 

You have previous experience, and/or a good understanding of project management (if you have experience in retail, even better!) 

You are adaptable, resilient and a quick learner 

You are committed to maintaining a Zero Waste workplace. 

You are passionate about environmentally sustainable products and business practices. 

You are self-driven, take direction well & follow through on tasks and assignments. 

You are a good communicator, able to relate well to people of all ages & backgrounds. 

You always deliver outstanding customer service 

Responsibilities include: 

Managing and supporting store staff, including breaks, rotas and submitting timesheets 

Collecting and responding to customer and staff feedback 

Communicating with Steering Committee and Student Opportunities Co-Ordinator on progress of store 

Coming up with creative campaigns and finding new exciting products and suppliers to bring to the store 

Social Media  and website – planning and creating content for Facebook and Instagram including taking photos of products, ensuring opening hours are up to date 

Visual merchandising, goods presentation, seasonal displays 

Adding products to the scales and till system, creating product labels 

Managing and ordering stock, communicating with suppliers, accepting and checking deliveries 

Assisting in setting up a veg & fruit box ordering system 

Overseeing health & safety and hygiene processes, making sure these are followed by all staff 

Assisting customers with all product enquiries and in the selection of goods and transactions 

Cleaning and maintenance of sales floor and storage areas
