Are you a woodwind, brass, percussion, or string bass player? If so, join the Concert Band and keep playing whilst at university in a fun, active and sociable band!
Established in 1990, the Strathclyde University Concert Band is comprised of current students, staff, and alumni of the university, as well as students from other institutions. Under the musical direction of conductor Chris Mitchell, the band has grown in recent years and has won a number of high awards at the Scottish Concert Band Festival and the National Concert Band Festival along with presenting several concerts a year across the Greater Glasgow area. We accept woodwind, brass, percussion and string bass players.
We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 5:30-7:30pm in the Royal College Assembly Hall on campus. You can also join our Facebook group, used to share the latest information with our active members.

In October 2022, we held our annual Band Camp, travelling to Dounans Centre in Aberfoyle for a weekend of rehearsals, games, a ceilidh and late night karaoke. Thanks to everyone who came along - we hope you had as much fun as the committee did! A big thank you to the Alumni Fund and Strathclyde Union who helped us fund the trip - this funding was greatly appreciated as all players improved over the course of the weekend!
Following on from band camp, we held another joint Winter Concert with our friends in the Strathclyde University Jazz Orchestra on 9th December 2022. It was brilliant to play to an audience of friends and family - thank you to everyone who attended! The evening was recorded, and the film is now available here.
For the first time since Covid, we also participated in both the Scottish National Concert Band Festival (SCBF) and the National Concert Band Festival (NCBF), receiving a Gold Plus Award in the SCBF Final at Perth Concert Hall and a Platinum Award in the NCBF Final at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. We were thrilled to have achieved these awards and are looking forward to participating in both festivals again in the future!
After the examination period, we played in the first Strathclyde University Proms in a number of years alongside several other university music societies. This event was held in the Barony Hall on campus on 24th May 2023. We'd like to thank Professor Sir Jim McDonald for allowing us to use such a beautiful venue and for attending the event!
Band will soon be starting back for the 23/24 academic year and we look forward to seeing current and new players when we return for our first rehearsal on 21st September followed by a quiz in the Venue in the Union!
