Are you a woodwind, brass, percussion, or string bass player? If so, join the Concert Band and keep playing whilst at university in a fun, active and sociable band!
Established in 1990, Strathclyde University Concert Band (SUCB) is composed of current students, staff, and alumni of the University, as well as students from other institutions.
Each year we perform several concerts, and in recent years have received prestigious awards at the National Concert Band Festival, the Scottish Concert Band Festival, and international events under the guidance of our Musical Director, Chris Mitchell.
If you play woodwind, brass, percussion, or string bass, we would love to hear from you!
The Band is audition-free and rehearses every Thursday evening from 5:30-7:30pm in the Royal College Assembly Hall (RC471) on campus. Read below and check out our Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok pages to find out more, or join our Members' Facebook group.
We accept members throughout the year, so don't worry if you didn't come along during freshers!
Any questions? Feel free to send us an email or message us on one of our socials.

Last October, we started off the year by heading north to Aberfoyle for a weekend of fun, full of rehearsals, sectionals, the famous band camp ceilidh, and some late night karaoke. Not only was this a great opportunity for us to all get to know each other, but we also saw a great improvement in our sound over the weekend.
And all of that rehearsing paid off - following the success of a Platinum award at the National Concert Band (NCBF) Scottish Regional Festival in January, we were invited down to the National Festival in Warwick. After a 7-hour coach trip, we did it all over again and brought another Platinum award back home in March.
To show off all our hard work, we had a very busy schedule of concerts. At Christmas, we held a joint concert with Strathclyde University Jazz Orchestra and also took part in the University’s Christmas Carol Service. In the new year, we had another joint concert, this time with Edinburgh University Wind Band, and later a spring concert. To finish off the academic year we took part in the Strathclyde University Diamond Jubilee Summer Proms, collaborating with many other Societies under the roof of the Barony Hall, thanks to Professor Sir Jim McDonald.
The Band finished off the year by popping over to Ireland for the South of Ireland Band Championships in Clonakilty, where we placed third in the senior category, and our Musical Director Chris Mitchell received an award for his original composition. After burning off the celebratory dinner from the night before in the hotel pool, we also took some time to explore Cork and enjoy the Irish hospitality.
... and that doesn’t even cover our weekly socials, the Music Societies Christmas Ball, crazy golf, our sub crawl, and so much more! Thank you, in particular, to the University of Strathclyde Alumni Fund and the Strath Union Societies Executive, whose support has enabled many of the Society’s activities, not to mention all our Members who make it a reality.
