About us

What Can I Learn?

At Strathclyde Speakers, we understand that often, public speaking skills are not formally taught. This can lead to anxiety when we are asked to the deliver presentations confidently at the university-level. We believe that public speaking is a skill and like any other, practice makes perfect. Whether you are a complete beginner or have some experience with oration, we provide a safe space to build up the experience necessary to speak with authority and with ease.

How Can Strathclyde Speakers Help Me?

The key to becoming a good public speaker is continual practice and critical feedback. Joining Strathclyde Speakers provides you with the opportunity to deliver formal presentations, practice for job interviews, and any other speaking engagement in a safe and supportive environment.

Academic Year 2023/2024

In the 2022/2023 academic year, Strathclyde Speakers ran a brand new Public Speaking Programme in Semester 1. We invited applications from students across all faculties of the university and all year groups to participate in an 11-week structured programme with our professional public speaking coach.

We had an overwhelming interest from students keen to join us looking to enhance their skills and from over 150 applications, 40 were selected to proceed to the workshops. We met fortnightly for 3 months with the final sessions involving a speaking competition as well as an awards ceremony to celebrate our student's successes.

In Semester 2, we had a focus on meeting more socially and discussing what we had learned from the sessions. We were thrilled to see our members come together for various coffee meets and pizza nights to make life-long friends over a shared interest in public speaking.

Our Award-Winning Public Speaking Programme Returns!

We are delighted to announce that we are able to again offer our professional public speaking programme to students seeking to enhance their graduate attributes and help prepare them to deliver presentations and speeches with confidence.

We are a professional development society and as such our sessions are structured more formally and are focused on helping you get the most out of them. To ensure that our speaking coach can offer one-to-one feedback to our participants, spaces on the programme are limited. Applications will open on the 1st of October 2023 and the form will be available for completion here. Below, you will find a provisional timetable for the 2023/2024 programme, however, please note this is subject to change with more details being provided as we organise the sessions.

29th September 2023 - Applications open

13th October 2023 - Applications close

16th October 2023 - Successful applicants will be offered a space on the programe

16th - 22nd October 2023 - Participants will be asked to purchase membership to the society for £10

Workshops will commence at the start of November and be held once every 3 weeks until March 2024. The final session will consist of a short presentation delivered to the cohort followed by a prize giving ceremony. Content of the workshops will be made available in a dedicated members programme which will be issued to participants via email in October. Members will also be invited to join our WhatsApp group to help facilitate discussion between sessions.

Greatest Impact Award

For our innovative work in delivering the university's first professional public speaking programme, we were honoured to be awarded with the Greatest Impact Award at the 2023 Star Awards. We would like to thank Strath Union for their continued support throughout the year as well as the Alumni Team without whom, we would not have the funding to continue to host such a novel programme.

How Can I Engage with the Society?

To get the most out of the programme and your membership we recommend you fully engage with all sessions as well as attending the final workshop which will allow you to put your skills into practice.

We highly recommend you connect with us on our social media channels but in particular, LinkedIn. We will be hosting a short, informal networking session ahead of the programme start date to allow you to meet your peers and build cross-faculty connections. This will be advertised closer to the time.
