About us

What does the Debating Society actually do?

Strathclyde Debate Society is a club where like-minded people gather each week to discuss current affairs, social justice, politics, philosophy, and more. It's also a safe space to improve your speaking skills, as well as express your points of view. We hold sessions every Thursday at 5:30pm where we build upon our knowledge of the game, debate a selection of interesting topics, and socialise! In addition to our weekly meet-up, Strathclyde Debate Society has also been known to host multiple social events, as well as collaborations with other societies, unis, and external organisations.

2024 is the club's 100th Anniversary, and we're planning events which are bigger and bolder than ever before! Events such as our Halloween Masked Ball in October, as well as our "Hit List," which will see us challenge fellow Debate Societies, as well as Societies from around the Uni, to a debating duel. In short, we are an extremely active society, both on campus and in the wider debating circuit, that is always welcoming of new members.

Why should I join?

Debating has been known to build upon critical thinking, argumentative abilities, and persuasion techniques. We believe profoundly that debating can teach you life skills that you will carry with you for the rest of your life, which we are committed to promoting in a relaxed, accessible environment. Multiple society members have also attested to improvements to their confidence as a result of taking part. We encourage anyone who would benefit from these things to join the Strathclyde Debate Society! If demand is high enough, we also plan to return to the competition circuit, so if that's something which interests you, don't hesitate to give us a bell!

How do I join?

Anyone and everyone is welcome to join the Strathclyde Debating Society! Feel free to come along to our weekly meet-ups on Thursdays at 5:30pm and attend any of our events. Our Thursday meet-ups are in MC319 of the McCance Building. For more information either email us at strathdebates1@gmail.com, or message us on our Instagram page: (@strathclydedebate). We're also currently in the process of reviving our Facebook page, so feel free to contact us there soon! You are also able to add any of our committee members on these platforms too, who would be more than willing to answer any questions you have!

To officially join Strathclyde Debating Society, please click 'become a member' on this page or contact our society page or Instagram to be added to the group chat. And because there is no membership fee, there is no commitment: if you try it and it isn’t for you, then no worries.

We hope to see you soon!
