Astrid Yates Charity Year

Raise funds for charity all year and win £500!

What is the Astrid Yates Charity Year?

Charity Year is a fundraising competition for societies run by the Societies Exec committee.

All through the 2024/25 academic year, we're asking societies to raise money for a charity or charities of your choice.

You can run fundraising initiatives, host a fundraising event or run a challenge for your members ‐ the details are entirely up to you!

We're running the competition in memory of Astrid Yates.

We honour the life of Astrid, a dedicated student volunteer and much-loved member of our Strath Union community who sadly died in an accident in 2019. Throughout her time at Strathclyde, Astrid was a dedicated society volunteer who made a huge impact through her charitable work.

The prize categories include:

Most Funds Raised (Semester 1)

If your society raises the most out of all entrants by December 18th, you'll win £250

Most Funds Raised (Semester 2)

If your society raises the most out of all entrants by March 25th, you'll win £250.

Best Collaboration

This category rewards collaboration between 2 or more societies. If your entry is judged the best out of all the entrants, you'll win £500 (split equally between all invovled societies)

Remember to use #CharityYear on Instagram to showcase all the fantastic events and work you are putting in over the year!

**As well as the prize money, the winners of each category will recieve an award presented at the STAR Awards 2024.

Need inspiration?

We wanted to shout out some recent examples of fundraising at the Union to give you some ideas on how to get creative with your plans.

  1. Movember

The Strathclyde Movember efforts raised over £15,000 through a variety of fundraising efforts including a quiz night, deadlifting challenge and soak the president event.

  2. Crafternoon for Palestine

Following the crafternoon, held by the Student Officers, lino printed christmas cards created by students were sold at a stall at the Chrsitmas Market to fundraise for Medical Aid for Palestinians.

If any societies are looking for a charity partner or project to support, the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity is keen to work with student groups on fundraising activities. Get in touch with Steven Mair if your society is interested.
